How to Bill Loose Tablets: Strip Math Every Pharmacist Must Know
A patient needs four tablets, not a strip of fifteen. In India that is not an edge case — it is the daily reality of affordable pharmacy practice. Yet "loose tablet billing" breaks most billing software, because it assumes whole packs. Here is the complete strip math every counter team should know cold.
Why Loose Billing Is Uniquely Indian
Affordability drives dispensing quantity. Patients buy what they need for a course, chemists oblige, and the pack is broken. It is legitimate dispensing practice — but it demands arithmetic honesty at the counter.
The One Formula
Tablet Price = Strip MRP ÷ Pack Size
| Item | Strip MRP | Pack size | Unit price | Billing 4 units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dolo 650 | ₹30.00 | 15 tabs | ₹2.00 | ₹8.00 |
| Pan-D | ₹162.00 | 15 caps | ₹10.80 | ₹43.20 |
| Azithral 500 | ₹138.50 | 5 tabs | ₹27.70 | ₹110.80 |
Rounding: Choose a Policy and Never Deviate
Unit prices rarely divide cleanly. Decide one rounding rule — two decimals, or nearest 50 paise — set it in software and let the system enforce it. Manual rounding that varies per cashier is a silent margin leak and an audit smell.
What It Does to Your Inventory
- Stock must track fractional strips — 0.4 of a strip is a real quantity.
- Batch identity survives splitting: the 4 tablets came from some batch, and that batch must stay traceable.
- Physical counts will show open strips; count in tablets and convert, or variance will haunt your ledger.
The Legal Line: Dispensing vs Repacking
Selling loose tablets dispensed from an original manufacturer's pack under a pharmacist's supervision is standard practice. Repacking tablets into new packs with new labels is manufacturing-adjacent activity requiring different licences — know the line and stay on the right side of it.
How Software Must Handle It
- Per-line sale-mode toggle (Full / Loose) with keyboard control.
- Automatic unit price calculation shown before the line is added.
- Fractional inventory decrement on the correct batch (FEFO).
- Invoice wording patients understand: "Dolo 650 — 4 tabs (from strip)".
- MRP ceiling enforcement at unit level — the unit price can never exceed unit MRP.
Worked Examples With Rounding
| Strip MRP | Pack | Tablets sold | Exact amount | Rounded (nearest 50 paise) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹32.50 | 15 | 4 | ₹8.67 | ₹8.50 |
| ₹45.00 | 10 | 3 | ₹13.50 | ₹13.50 |
| ₹118.00 | 6 | 2 | ₹39.33 | ₹39.50 |
Rounding up must never push the price above the proportionate MRP — if your rule rounds up, check it against MRP ÷ pack size × quantity, or round down instead.
FAQ
- Can I charge more per tablet for breaking a strip? Not above the proportionate MRP — that is a Legal Metrology ceiling, not a guideline.
- How do returns of loose tablets work? Generally, dispensed loose tablets are not returnable to stock — but bill returns are supported with credit notes.
- Do I need pack size on every item? Yes — the entire calculation depends on it.
